Bill Greenleaf- PGA Master Professional, Director of Instruction at The Dunes at Maui Lani
“Timing is a basic concept in the conversations about the golf swing.  What is timing
and how can we experience it?  The SwingRite which has been around since 1960
(I used one in growing up) is a simple mechanical tool that makes a sound loud enough
to notice when enough centrifugal force is created during the downswing.  When that sound
happens where the golf ball would be, that's timing.  My recommendation is to practice with the SwingRite at the easiest setting and use the smallest amount of speed necessary to make the SwingRite activate.  Stay at that setting and explore the feeling of creating the downward force necessary to click the mechanism.  When you are really confident at the 9 setting - adjust the setting one number and begin the process again.  Most golfers will see distance and accuracy gains at light settings - turning the SwingRite tool into the challenge of:  can I click it at a lower setting? is a dead end and does not lead to a feel for how little effort is necessary to create powerful timing in the golf swing.  SwingRite is the finest learning tool I've ever used as a player and as a teacher.  I've been using it since I was 16 and teaching with it since it's reintroduction in the 1980's.”
