AVERAGE JOES

The PGA Tour keeps statistics on just about every facet of the game. So consider what the average Tour pro is doing so far in 2011. He hits his tee shots 286 yards and lands in the fairway 60.23 percent of the time, reaches 65.17 percent of the greens in regulation, hits his approach shot 36’ 5” from the cup, takes 29.17 putts per round, and fires a score of 71.3 per round. While using all of the latest equipment definitely helps Tour pros achieve stats like these, it seems to really boost the efforts of pros on the Champions Tour. Consider the likes of Fred Couples and Nick Price. Couples is leading the Champions Tour in two key categories: He averages tee shots of 298.6 yards this year and is taking only 27.33 putts per round. At the recent Toshiba Classic, he was edged out by Nick Price, who was playing a slew of new equipment, including TaylorMade’s R11 driver, Adams Idea Pro Black hybrid and Miura’s Forged irons.

EQUIPMENT

NIKE VR PRO CAVITY IRONS

Nike is opening a lot of eyes this year with its solid iron designs. This new set of irons has a dual audience: Its clean lines aesthetically please the discerning eye of Tour pros and its performance surpasses the expectations of aspiring golfers. The VR Pro Cavity irons aim to offer more forgiveness, distance and better ball flight than most Tour-level forged irons. The Opti-Mass Weighting system -- an injection-molded blend of polymer and high-density tungsten -- gets the weight low, deep and centralized, guaranteeing that the CG is in an ideal position for optimal trajectory, launch and distance. Plus, it acts as a dampening tool on harsh stingers. You’ll quickly get the confidence you need to hit your shots aggressively and be able to trust that you have consistent distance control with each iron in the set.

BUSHNELL HYBRID LASER GPS

The best of both worlds, it features a laser yardage finder for accuracy to within one yard plus the at-a-glance convenience and versatility of a GPS unit on the side. More than 16,000 North American courses are pre-loaded, so you don’t have to worry about connecting the device to your computer before heading to the course. Weighing just 8 ounces, this handheld unit boasts 5x magnification and distance to the front, center and back of every green; auto hole advance; auto course recognition; and no one-time or re-occurring membership fees. Its Pinseeker Technology also eliminates background clutter, when you’re locating the flag through the viewfinder. You will not find a more convenient handheld distance unit. Just arrive at the course, turn on the device, and you’re ready to step up to the tee. You’ll never be anywhere on-course without the proper yardage again.
